We are pleased to present the winners of the  2011 BEST OF THE HOUSE SHORT STORY CONTEST, judged by writer Gerald Duff.  We are grateful to Mr. Duff, who said of the winner, “The Bet” by Steven D. Stark, ” The author of The Bet has created a story that in a small compass manages to work on multiple levels with character, situation, theme, statement, present moment and interaction of that with the living past. The story speaks to itself continually, and that’s amazing. The skillful movement back and forth from “now” to “then,” from momentous public event to circumscribed interchange between private individuals, from the local to the universal (to employ an overused but crucial term). is masterfully handled and gives the story its remarkable energy. It works, and it works wonderfully. And the ending is stunning, yet inevitable, just as a short story should be.” 

Gerald Duff has published fiction and poetry in Kenyon Review, Southwest Review, Sewanee Review, Ploughshares, Missouri Review, Clapboard House and other magazines. His most recent collection of short stories, Fire Ants, was published by NewSouth Books, and his

 Eric Nelson received his B.A. in English from Virginia Tech (1975) and his M.A. from the Johns Hopkins University Writing Seminars (1977). His poems have appeared in many journals, including Poetry, The Southern Review, Missouri Review, Poetry Northwest, The Christian Science Monitor, and Oxford American. He has been a Featured Poet on Poetry magazine’s website and on Verse Daily and Poetry Daily. Several anthologies, including A New Geography of Poets, (University of Arkansas Press); I Feel A Little Jumpy Around You, (Simon and Schuster); and Georgia Voices: Poetry (University of Georgia Press), also contain his poetry.

    Among his awards are the X.J. Kennedy Poetry Award, the Arkansas Poetry Award, and fellowships to the Hambidge Center for the Arts and the Virginia Center for Creative Arts. His poems have been nominated frequently for a Pushcart Prize.
